Although mobile network operators have significantly invested in their transmission network using fiber optic infrastructure to replace the traditional systems, there has been an increase in the number of network outages in fiber optics networks such as fiber cable and components failures. This research work was carried out using Vodafone Ghana Ltd optical network infrastructure as a case study to investigate and analyze causes of failures in fiber optic systems. The research design is explanatory, a pragmatic approach, where the initial quantitative data results were further explained with a qualitative study. Interview guide used to obtain the qualitative data and a questionnaire used for the quantitative data from the technical teams responsible for maintaining the optical network across the country and have the technical expertise of operating and maintaining the optical network. The study established there are major and minor causes of fibers optic systems failures. The major failures are constructions/excavating/digging activities, broken core issues, messy joint box faults and rodents/terminate activities. While bush burning, weeding/farming, vandalism, sand winning, faulty splitter, aerial cable damage, cable theft, rains/flooding, kink, degraded core, patch cord issues and faulty module are minor causes. The study further established that it’s due to internal factors such as no due diligence in deployment of fibers systems leading to cables been exposed or shallow buried, leaving dugout not correctly covered, exposed fiber cabinets too natural phenomenon such as rains/floods/terminates, and virtually no routine preventive maintenance. Although, this study acknowledges that there is the need for external stakeholder consultation in addressing one of the major issues such as the activities of the contractors, this study is of the view that considering root causes of the both the major and minor issues, internal stakeholder is much needed in this regard. Many methods have been developed to secure computer networks and communication over the Internet. However, none of the existing methods developed by different researches have an accuracy of detecting attacks with high detection rate and low false alarm rate. The other thing is most deal with single detection approach with high number of features which is challenging and time consuming to implement. Also it will examine only either previously known attacks or unknown attacks. This thesis work is devoted to solve those problems using intrusion detection system architecture that is based on neural network, signatures and dimension reduction that can promptly detect and classify attacks, whether they are known or never seen before. The proposed hybrid intrusion detection system combines signature based and anomaly based techniques. Signature based open source which uses pattern search for attack detection and the anomaly based system is developed using machine learning technique. We implemented dimension reduction using dataset NSL-KDD and train the system using the well-known artificial neural network algorithm in the area of intrusion detection. The evaluation of performance and implementation of the proposed hybrid intrusion detection system are made with Java programming language using NetBeans. The results obtained by the implementation and evaluation are measured in comparison with other works done using single detection approach. The result shows that the output is encouraging and further refinement of the work can produce more robust and reliable intrusion detection system. In order to assess the effects that the quality of maintenance management practices has operational performance. Primary data obtained from engineers, maintenance supervisors, technicians and top level managers was used for the analysis. Descriptive statistics using the relative importance index method and regression analysis was performed on the obtained data. SPSS and Microsoft Excel were used for the data analysis. The findings revealed that MODEC Ghana Ltd has adopted ten (10) key maintenance management practices in its operations. Out of these ten practices, five emerged as the most frequently used. They are preventive maintenance, computer based management maintenance, scheduled maintenance, productive maintenance and condition based maintenance. It emerged also from the findings that top managers at MODEC Ghana Ltd contributed tremendously towards effective implementation of maintenance management practices. Key areas that their contributions were highly rated by respondents are budgetary allocation, their ability to make provision for technical training, provision of contemporary tools or equipment and provision of expert diagnostic or trouble shooting systems among others. From the result it emerged that “non-occurrence of accidents” and “reduction in the overall plant operation cost are the two major benefit of maintenance management that contributed positively to operational performance at MODEC Ghana Ltd. Maintenance practice have also resulted to “efficiency of the machines” and has reduced the occurrence of forced shutdowns counts per month, and increased plant reliability at MODEC. However if maintenance management is not done properly it can lead to machinery breakdown which can extend to plant shutdown. The regression results revealed that preventive maintenance, computer based management maintenance, scheduled maintenance, productive maintenance and condition based maintenance explained a positive and significant association with operational performance. This study however, used an existing model for IS success for evaluating an information system’s success (ISS) at the Port of Tema by applying the DeLone & McLean update IS success model (D&M). The proposed model was adopted to demonstrate how its elements could be applied in evaluating IS implementations and also to support the decision makers in evaluating and developing the information systems. The study adopted a mixed method approach which includes both qualitative and quantitative approaches. 150 questionnaires were administered to collect primary data from port operational staff of GPHA and secondary data of organisation reports were also obtained for analysis. The results indicated that perceived usefulness, ease of use, accuracy, timeliness, reliability, user support significantly affected the use and user satisfaction of an information. It further indicated that an increase in these variables will result in positive outcome from the information system implementation. The proposed model used better explains the interrelation between the constructs and the interrelationship that exit among the construct has a strong statistical significance influence on GPHA employee usage intention.
